IMPORTANCE OF AMAN SERIES OF EXERCISE – Daily Notable

Whenever and wherever nations have engaged with oceans, they have experienced progress and prosperity while isolation has led to decline and stagnation.
Joining hands for the peaceful use of oceans for benefit of all has brought development to countries while wars fought over the oceans for benefit of all has brought development to countries while wars fought over the oceans have brought disaster.
Indian Ocean being one of the major water bodies on the globe has remained an important area throughout due to its unique strategic location and unexplored natural resources.
Indian Ocean after rightly been dubbed as ‘Energy Highway’ in 21st century has all the features essential for influencing rest of the world due to its prime location, trade volume and its orientation as well as cultural and ideological bonds of regional population which act as catalyst for economic prosperity.
The ever changing threat matrix in maritime domain directly impact country’s economic growth.
Therefore strategic outlook for Indian Ocean Region (IOR) merits continuous examination for working out appropriate response to the evolving challenges in the future. In this regard Pakistan being a responsible and peace loving nation in IOR has reached out to formulate effective participation of like-mind nations.
Pakistan Navy has always brought the peace loving nations together promoting world peace and harmony in the Indian Ocean through deeper cooperation in maritime sphere. In this regard, Pakistan Navy took the initiative and started a biennial multinational ‘AMAN’ series of exercises since 2007 with the slogan ‘Together for Peace’.
The exercise involves naval assets and observers from regional as well as extra-regional navies. The basic idea of exercise is catching the imaginations of number of maritime nations which share a keen interest in common use of seas of world for peaceful co-existence, which is a clear reflection of its surrounding success and receptiveness of this initiative.
AMAN series of naval exercises are designed to provide a common forum for information sharing, mutual understanding and identifying areas of common interest among its participants while practicing and developing response tactics, techniques and procedures against asymmetric and traditional threats.
The exercise is spread over harbor and sea phases. The sea phase provides an opportunity to naval units to focus on interoperability and mutual understanding of capabilities and skill levels of each other through a wide range of activities. In harbor phase number of conferences, seminars, workshops and IHDs are conducted.
The sea phase provides the participating units an opportunity to operate under various scenarios while undertaking multiple evolutions together thereby enhancing interoperability amongst multiple platforms of different nations.
Such multinational exercises not only create stability and understanding between nations but also provide an opportunity to reinforce political, economic, commercial and cultural, commercial and cultural linkages between the participating countries.
The objective/goal of ‘AMAN’ exercise is to achieve safe and secure oceans for international shipping and trade. Every time the exercise has a specific goal encompassing its main theme i.e. ‘Together for Peace’ which is also embossed on the logo of the exercise. Navies have already been invited for AMAN-21 scheduled in Feburary 2021.
