On 16th May famous gastroenterologist of Sargodha was shot dead by unknown assailant.
Dr Mehmood was not supposed to visit the hospital that day but went there due to the calls from his hospital that an unknown person is griefly in pain and is need of check up.
Dr Mehmood went to the hospital to check the patient and it turned out that the person was depicting himself as patient.
Actually he was there to kill him the murderer was wearing an official uniform of “Saaf Suthra Punjab”.
This incident itself shows that Dr. Mehmood was very attentive and dutiful regarding his patients and treated them without discrimination.
It is told that a relative was with Dr Mehmood at the time of incident and the gunman also threatened the relative to get out of the way and then flee the scene very easily.
This incident raises a lot of questions that why hospital administration was complicit as there was no security guard at the door and the patients were not searched at all which caused the huge security lapse.
This happened on the day when people were celebrating the victory of the armed forces of the Pakistan and the enemy struck from within.
Dr. Sheikh Mahmood was more than a doctor. He was a humanitarian who dedicated his life to healing and helping others.
He was even forced to quit his job due to pressure from extremist groups. Despite receiving serious threats, he continued to serve the people of Sargodha.
His relatives told us that they wished that he should go abroad and live his life peacefully there, instead he chose Sargodha to serve and told them that time of death is being decided by Almighty and no one can change it.
Dr. Sheikh Mahmood was 58. He leaves behind a grieving mother, his wife, two daughters, and two sons.
An important question which should be answered is that if a person with great humility and sincerity can be killed in such a barbaric manner then anyone of us can be lynched on just a mere allegation.
This was not a mere murder but an organized crime as Dr. Mehmood was continuously receiving death threats and his relatives told us that even in mortuary they saw the members of extremist groups investigating about him.
We demand immediate accountability of the culprits. The government must act with concrete action to protect its citizens.
