“Abducted & Silenced Voices: The Shrinking Space for Journalism in Pakistan”

Pakistan’s journalists are navigating one of their most precarious periods in decades. While the constitution guarantees freedom of expression.

Beat the Heat In Lahore this Summer Book a Private Farm & Pool:

The ground reality for Journalists in 2026 is marked by intimidation, legal harassment, and economic insecurity that together threaten the very existence of independent media.

State pressure has intensified through both formal and informal channels. Journalists covering security policy, corruption face FIRs under vague laws related to sedition, defamation, and cybercrime.

The Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, originally framed to combat digital crime, is frequently used to summon or detain reporters for social media posts.

Corruption, Mismanagement & Incompetence of LDA

Physical safety remains a grave concern. Quetta, Karachi and parts of KP have seen abductions, assaults, and targeted shootings of local correspondents.

Impunity is the norm: investigations stall, suspects are rarely named, and trials almost never reach conviction. This climate forces self-censorship.

Many journalists including myself admit they avoid “red-line” topics like enforced disappearances, military courts, and blasphemy cases to protect themselves and their families.

Journalists were suffering in Pakistan from a very long time but it all escalated in the era of the government of PTI Founder now who proclaim themselves masters of freedom of speech.

We as a community ourselves have to take a part of the blame as well because when one of us was targeted the others stood silent until it was there turn, now it is responsibility of every journalist to stand together with there fellow brethren in solidarity to face the injustices together setting aside our differences and prides.

Yet all is not lost resistance persists Civil society and the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists continue legal battles against censorship. International watchdogs rank Pakistan among the most dangerous countries for media, but also note its resilient reporting community.

The cost of truth in Pakistan is rising. When journalists are silenced, accountability dies first. Protecting them is not just about press freedom – it’s about preserving the public’s right to know.
