Iran-US War: Stalemate at the Strait of Hormuz -DN

What’s happening right now:

PUNA– The conflict between the US, Israel and Iran that started on Feb 28, 2026 is still active, though a fragile ceasefire has been in place since April 8.

The main flashpoint is the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has largely restricted shipping through the waterway since the war began and now requires all commercial vessels to coordinate transit with Iranian military authorities. Tehran says it will announce a “professional mechanism” for managing traffic and collecting tolls soon.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that Tehran is ready to return to direct confrontation if talks fail. President Trump responded on May 17, saying “there won’t be anything left of them” if Iran doesn’t agree to a deal quickly.

Negotiations mediated by Pakistan remain stalled. The US reportedly offered a 5-point proposal demanding Iran keep only one nuclear facility operational, transfer 400kg of enriched uranium, and accept no war reparations. Iran’s counterproposal called for an end to hostilities on all fronts, lifting of sanctions, release of frozen assets, and recognition of Iranian control over Hormuz. Both sides say the other’s terms are “unacceptable”.

Why this matters for world peace:

1.Regional spillover:

The war has already drawn in Israel, Lebanon and Hezbollah. Israel launched airstrikes on southern Lebanon on May 17 despite a ceasefire extension. Hezbollah fired 200 projectiles over the weekend.

2.Naval escalation risk:

Iran warned that countries backing a US-led UN resolution on Hormuz would share responsibility if tensions escalate. The US maintains a naval blockade on Iranian ports.

3.Diplomatic deadlock:

The core issue is incompatible demands. The US wants verifiable limits on Iran’s nuclear program and no concessions before talks. Iran wants sanctions lifted, assets released, and its sovereignty over Hormuz recognized before giving up leverage.

The economic stakes:

The Strait of Hormuz handles roughly 20% of global oil and LNG shipments in peacetime.

What’s happening now:

  • Oil markets:

The disruption has pushed oil above $100/barrel and rattled Asian markets. Iran says it’s already collecting revenue from new tolls on vessels.

  • Iran’s economy:

Food inflation hit 115% in the first Persian month ending late April. Staples like cooking oil, rice and chicken have tripled in price over the past year. The Rial is near all-time lows at 1.8 million to the USD.

  • US impact:

Iran claims the war is feeding back into the US economy, with rising energy and inflation costs since Feb 28.

  • Global trade:

Europe is negotiating directly with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard navy for shipping access. Ships are reportedly “parking” in the strait due to high tension.

Where things stand Current status:

Stalemate. A ceasefire holds on paper, but sporadic attacks continue and no long-term deal is close. Pakistan’s interior minister and army chief have visited Tehran to restart talks.

Why it’s crucial for world peace and economics:

If the Hormuz restriction becomes permanent, it would force a restructuring of global energy trade routes, raising costs for everyone from Europe to East Asia. A full military escalation risks drawing in more regional actors and further destabilizing the Middle East.Conversely, a deal that addresses both nuclear concerns and sanctions could lower oil prices, ease inflation, and reduce the risk of wider conflict. For now, the situation remains in a holding pattern. As Iran’s Foreign Ministry put it, a lack of trust is the main obstacle.
