The Weakness Of PTI Getting Exposed

PUNA–

In 2018 the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf rose to power on the promise of accountability, merit, and “Naya Pakistan.

Since 2022, the party has faced legal pressure, Imran Khan’s imprisonment, and electoral hurdles. But beyond external challenges, PTI’s own leadership structure and decision-making have exposed recurring weaknesses that undermine its effectiveness as a governing and opposition force.

Saaf Suthra Punjab: A Cleanliness Project Drowning in Corruption

1. Centralization and One-Man Rule:

PTI’s biggest strength is its identification with Imran Khan and that has also become its biggest structural weakness. Party decisions often hinge on Khan’s approval, leaving little room for decentralized leadership.

In 2025, PTI issued an internal memo to establish a strict “chain of command” where provincial and district office bearers report directly to the secretary general. Critics within the party called it undemocratic, arguing it turns PTI into an “army unit” and entrenches one-man rule. The move was aimed at streamlining communication, but it reinforced perceptions that dissent is discouraged and institutional processes are weak.

2. Factionalism and Regional Imbalance:

Without clear power-sharing mechanisms, PTI struggles with internal rifts. In 2025 Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet expansion highlighted this issue where Malakand, Charsadda, and Nowshera secured three slots each, while North and South Waziristan, Bannu, and Bajaur got none despite having PTI MPAs.

The re-induction of controversial figures like Shakil Khan, associated with the Atif Khan group, also triggered backlash. Party insiders describe “establishment-backed elements” exploiting these communication gaps. Fawad Chaudhry has publicly attributed the problem to “lack of experienced leadership” and limited decision-making capacity among those currently in charge.

3. Strategic Errors in Parliament:

PTI’s approach to parliamentary politics has often been reactive. In 2025, after the Senate and National Assembly declared the opposition leader posts vacant, PTI refused to nominate replacements and opted to fight the decision in court.

Observers called it a strategic mistake. By sitting out, PTI risked ceding control over key parliamentary appointments to the government, weakening its ability to check legislation and constitutional appointments. The decision reflected a preference for confrontation over institutional maneuvering.

4. Communication Gaps and Reliance on Virtual Politics:

During Imran Khan’s incarceration, PTI relied heavily on Zoom meetings and social media to coordinate. Party officials admitted this created “miscommunication” and allowed criticism to spread unchecked.

The shift to physical meetings was framed as a fix, but it exposed how dependent the party had become on centralized, remote direction rather than grassroots structures.

5. Governance and Perception Issues During Tenure:

Critics from PML-N and PPP pointed to early governance failures during PTI’s 2018-2022 term in which merit was allegedly sidelined, bureaucracy politicized, and promises of jobs and housing not delivered.

The appointment of a record number of unelected advisers and special assistants also caused resentment among elected lawmakers, who felt excluded from decision-making and development funds.

6. Over-Reliance on Popularity of Imran Khan:

PTI’s unity largely depends on Khan’s personal popularity. As Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram admitted, “everyone in the party knew they cannot survive without the founding chairman”.

This creates a succession problem and makes the party vulnerable when Khan is incapacitated legally or politically.

Conclusion:

PTI’s leadership weaknesses stem less from ideology and more from structure which is over-centralization, poor intra-party communication, factional favoritism, and tactical missteps in parliament.

While external pressure explains part of its struggle, these internal gaps limit its ability to govern effectively or act as a cohesive opposition.

If PTI wants to convert popular support into lasting political capital, it needs institutional checks, experienced second-tier leadership, and a decision-making process that goes beyond one individual.
